Quest

Read 5 books to learn a specific set of skills. Book units do not apply to this quest.

What you need to know

A skill is the ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance. It is not just about gaining knowledge. The execution, or doing part of the equation is vital. So in this quest, your reading needs to lead to a greater ability to do something.

Who should attempt this quest?

Not all who read books do so for leisure and relaxation. Those who seek to acquire practical knowledge to be able to achieve a goal will find this quest very fulfilling. No made-up fluff. No impressive facts to wow peers with. You’ll be reading down to earth information that you can immediately put to use. You get to design your little curriculum, no more depending on teachers for that.

How do I decide which skills to learn?

To decide on what skills to learn, you can ask yourself any of these questions. Is there something I wish I could do? Is there a skill that I will do well to have right now? What do I wish to do in the near future? What skills do I need to achieve this goal? To achieve big goals, you often have to break them down into smaller manageable tasks, and each of these smaller tasks would normally need specific skills. What better time to start learning than now!

How many skills do I need to learn in this quest?

You can pick a maximum of 3 skills that are related to each other. For example, if you would like to design and build a website, you’ll probably wish to learn about typography, design principles or even basic HTML/CSS. If your goal is to be a journalist, you may want to brush up on your persuading skills, essay writing skills or even psychology.

What should I expect from these books?

Books of this type often entail clear explanations to procedures needed to accomplish a certain task. These can be written in typical paragraph-style explanations or in a sequential step-by-step process such as those most commonly found in recipe books. Experts in the given field may also share inspiring personal experiences and specific tips and tricks that can assist one in achieving their aspirations.

Must I read every single page of the 5 books?

Some books are written to  be read completely, so those should be read in their entirety. Some books on the other hand have chapters specific to a certain skill.  In these cases, you may browse the whole book but zoom in on those relevant chapters.
