What you need to know

Fantasy needs no introduction - often represented in popular media through titles such as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, almost everyone knows to an extent, the contents of this magical genre.

Fantasy has its roots in myths and legends with many of its stories being set in a medieval-inspired world. Tolkein, creator of the Lord of the Rings Legendarium with its Anglo-Saxon setting paved the way for most modern fantasy authors, popularising the usage of constructed languages, detailed maps and sprawling stories that often cannot be finished in one sitting. However, since its success, many subsequent authors have broken from that mould, with fantasy settings inspired by the mythologies of other countries becoming increasingly popular and more diverse subgenres being created.

Fantasy is, by definition, broad with a myriad of sub-genres to comb through, some of which you might find especially enticing! To help you get started, the SIC has written a blog post "Getting to know the Fantasy Genre" that guides you through the various different sub- genres so that you can easily find the one that excites you!

Reader Profile

Fantasy Fanatics are wide-eyed dreamers who love to bask in a kaleidoscope of imagination. Even after eyes are off the pages of a fantasy book, their minds continue to explore and roam these splendid imagined worlds that authors spend decades constructing. Possessing extreme sensitivity to spiritual things, they crave the complexities and intricacies of adventure that can only be found beyond the realms of reality. Their ability to understand things from a grander scale makes them insightful and perceptive individuals.
